Our client is Liberty in North Korea (LiNK – Every year, thousands of North Koreans risk their lives to escape political and economic oppression. Even if they make it to China, they face grave danger because the Chinese government arrests and forcibly repatriates North Korean refugees. If sent back, they undergo interrogation and are at risk of extremely harsh punishments including torture, forced labor, forced abortions, and internment in a political prison camp. Even if they manage to evade the authorities in China, their illegal status forces them to work in invisible industries and leaves them vulnerable to exploitation by sex traffickers and unscrupulous employers. In these dire circumstances, many North Korean refugees do not have the resources or connections to get themselves out of China. That’s where LiNK comes in. 

After hearing countless stories of North Koreans who have struggled to pay or even find brokers, or were exploited and abused by brokers and other individuals while in search of freedom, LiNK committed to providing a way for North Koreans to make it to safety and freedom without cost or condition. They have steadily garnered information about escape routes through China and Southeast Asia and have established relationships with individuals on the ground who can help move refugees safely across borders. The free passage model ensures that refugees are treated with dignity and respect throughout the risky journey, and allows them to begin their new lives in freedom without the burden of broker loans. 

Liberty in North Korea has engaged us to recruit and place an experienced, skilled Director of Development with them. 

Position Overview 

The Director of Development will build and manage a diverse US-based donor solicitation and cultivation program focused on individuals (major & planned gifts, annual giving), foundation & corporate giving, events and online donors. This professional will work out of LiNK’s HQ office located in Long Beach, California. Goals for donor engagement, financial revenue, and other metrics will be established and reported. 

Reporting directly to the CEO & President,the Director will oversee LiNK’s direct mail, major donor, and foundation / corporate solicitation programs, online giving and will maintain a personal donor relationship program. She/he will be expected to spend significant time and effort personally meeting with current and potential donors and  will manage these activities on a general level and ensure monitoring and reporting systems are in place. Leading a Development staff of four, the Director will oversee and ensure fundraising programs are conducted within the overall strategy of the organization. 

Primary Responsibilities 

●      Work with the CEO and Board to prepare annual development goals and monitor revenues. Prepare and administer department budget, projecting and achieving revenue goals.

●      Oversee the creation and expansion of an overall strategy for growing individual major gifts from constituents nationally. Develop and implement a strategic plan for increasing private donor support, including contact with current donors and prospective donors.

●      Develop a major giving program aimed at identifying major donors, cultivating relationships, and soliciting gifts.

●      Develop and manage a successful and ambitious online giving and annual donor program to grow and diversify the organization’s donor base.

●      Oversee efforts of development staff in areas including but not limited to: special events, foundation support, major and planned gifts, and online and direct mail fundraising.

●      Prepare periodic analysis of the progress, effectiveness, and efficiency of various development programs and systems, identifying problems in meeting objectives and recommending solutions.

●      Create innovative ways to show donors their return on investment and impact on Link’s mission. 


●      College degree and a minimum of 5 years professional fundraising, with a minimum of 2 years’ experience leading a fundraising department.

●      Successful track record in individual and major giving, demonstrated success in major donor cultivation and solicitation. Experience in hiring, training and supervising staff.

●      Knowledge of financial management to allocate resources, prepare budgets, analyze financial data and project fundraising income.

●      Positive attitude and ability to inspire confidence in your team and organization supporters.

●      Ability to work effectively under constant pressure deadlines; requires excellent organizational skills, time management efficiency, and careful attention to detail.

●      Effective and compelling written and oral communication skills.

●      Experience with fundraising and research software.

●      Willingness to travel frequently.
